Recruitment revolution! Shopify sets rules: AI can't do it, humans can take the job

On April 7, 2025, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced that the company will not approve new recruitment requests unless managers can prove that certain tasks cannot be completed by artificial intelligence.

Shopify provides an e-commerce platform that enables merchants to create, manage and develop their own online stores. Its competitors, in addition to the old Amazon and eBay, are similar SaaS e-commerce platforms such as BigCommerce, Wix eCommerce, and Squarespace Commerce.

And this recruitment adjustment of Shopify is a very radical AI adoption strategy. In Shopify's view, AI is no longer just seen as an auxiliary tool, but as a potential substitute or core driver for certain positions. If AI can really meet Shopify's recruitment requirements, then for Shopify, it is exciting to promote efficiency and automation. In this way, relying on the power of artificial intelligence, this is definitely a cost-cutting and efficiency-enhancing measure.

On the other hand, Shopify's inclination towards AI recruitment may inspire management and teams to innovate on "how to get the job done", resulting in new workflows, automated solutions, and even new AI-driven features for customers. This is also a boost for AI hardware or software vendors in the market.

But what is curious is, what kind of work will Shopify hand over to artificial intelligence?
