Huawei's 910C AI Chip to Begin Mass Production in May, Aiming to Break Dependency on Nvidia

China’s tech giant Huawei is set to launch its 910C AI chip, part of its Ascend series. As the export of Nvidia’s H20 to China faces increasing restrictions, Huawei’s 910C could become the hardware of choice for Chinese AI model developers and inference deployment.

So, how does the 910C AI chip perform?
The 910C integrates two 910B chips into a single package, effectively doubling compute power and memory capacity. According to DeepSeek’s benchmarks, the 910C delivers up to 60% of the inference performance of Nvidia’s H100. Performance can be further enhanced by optimizing the CUNN kernel.

While the 910C doesn’t match Nvidia chips in efficiency, its inference capabilities are already sufficient for a wide range of applications.

The question is: what’s inside the 910C, and who manufactures it?

Currently, the 910C is fabricated by SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation). In its early production stages, yield rates were as low as 20%, according to third-party data. However, by 2025, yields have improved to 40%, and are expected to continue rising. Huawei plans to produce 100,000 units of the 910C and 300,000 units of the 910B in 2025.

Architecturally, the 910C is based on Huawei’s Da Vinci architecture and is built using SMIC’s N+2 7nm process. It supports HBM2e high-bandwidth memory, delivers 3.2 TB/s memory bandwidth, and offers up to 800 TFLOP/s of FP16 compute performance. Compared to the 910B, the 910C enhances support for a wider variety of AI workloads.

Given the U.S. export restrictions on Nvidia’s H20 chip, Huawei’s 910C is expected to serve major Chinese tech companies like Baidu and ByteDance. Mass shipments will begin in May 2025, with some units already delivered to clients.

Although Huawei currently can’t rival Nvidia in the global market, this move carries significant strategic weight for China’s AI industry. As yields improve and core optimization continues, Huawei is poised to gain greater market influence and potential.
